The New York Mets have done a tremendous job in overhauling their roster in just a day. In a sudden spate of energy, Eduardo Escobar, Mark Canha, and Starling Marte all signed in New York over a few short hours. With those signings, the Mets are now reportedly looking to bolster their pitching staff.

However, there is one position player left that they need to sign. Javier Baez is in free agency, a player that the Mets would like to bring back. He would like to return to the Mets. However, the two sides are not even close to agreeing to a contract.

New York Mets need Javier Baez

On paper, the Mets have options if Baez does not return. Jeff McNeil has spent a good amount of time at second over the past few years and appeared to be a budding star before his power mysteriously disappeared. Robinson Cano is also, in theory, returning to the roster, but it remains to be seen if the Mets will keep him around or just eat that salary.

Baez provides a completely different dynamic. He is a brilliant defensive middle infielder, a Gold Glove shortstop who impressed at second base during his time with the Mets. His ability to hit for power and steal a base makes him an intriguing option in the lineup, even if his newfound patience does not last.

There is a secondary benefit to bringing Baez back as well. His presence ignited Francisco Lindor‘s bat as uniting the two friends brought the superstar shortstop back to form. Yes, the Mets have improved their roster and their depth, but if they plan to contend in 2022, Lindor will need to be the player he was once he returned from the Injured List in August.

Time is running out for a deal to come together. Baez is looking to sign before the CBA expires on December 1, especially given the possibility of a lockout. Plenty of other teams are interested in his services, and while the Mets may be looking at pitching now, they also need that piece in the middle of their infield. They need Javier Baez.

Javier Baez made a difference with the New York Mets. Even though their focus has shifted to pitching, they still need to bring him back.
