As we build up to this afternoon’s match at Brentford a former Everton star Louis Saha believes one summer target could be just what the Blues’ need.

Everton tried and failed to sign the Colombian in the summer window but couldn’t get the deal over the line with Diaz’s fellow countryman James Rodriguez refusing to go the other way and re-join his former club Porto.

Since then the 24-year-old has been in fantastic form and has nine goals in the Portuguese league and sixteen already in total this season.

With his pace, dribbling skills and his improved ability to create and score goals he would certainly represent an excellent addition to the Toffees’ attack. Rafa Benitez certainly seemed to be keen to get him in.

Given his talents and his current form it’s likely there will be other suitors for his signature when the summer window opens again.

And, his club are now talking of fees around £50 million for the South American star. That would surely put him out of the Blues’ reaches without some significant improvement in the financial circumstances, something that doesn’t seem likely.

However, Saha thinks a move to Goodison Park would be ideal and just what Diaz needs and that he could thrive there.

I would agree he certainly looks a very good potential signing, so we’ll see if anything further happens in the summer.

I don’t know if Everton will go back into the market and try to sign Diaz but it does seem clear that Benitez, or his successor, will want further wide attacking reinforcements.

Given all the club’s endless injury problems which have hit again this season it does seem clear that whoever is sitting in the Goodison hotseat needs as many options as possible.

In the meantime, Benitez does have the option of blooding some of the youngsters in the youth ranks such as Lewis Dobbon to see what they have to offer.

To be honest with so much uncetainty over what if anything the manager will have to spend in January, focussing on possible summer additions seems a long way off.
