LSU knocked off 15th-ranked Texas A&M 27-24 in Baton Rouge on Saturday night in what turned out to be coach Ed Orgeron’s final game.
The Tigers improved to 6-6 overall (3-5 in the SEC) with the win and are now bowl-eligible, but Orgeron said afterward he’s done as head coach. Offensive line coach Brad Davis will serve as interim coach for LSU’s bowl game.
Orgeron said he’s packing his bags and heading to Destin, Fla., with his girlfriend on Sunday.
“Whoever the new coach is, I wish him all the luck in the world,” Orgeron said, via The Advocate. “I’ll always be an LSU fan.”
LSU announced Oct. 17 that Orgeron would not return in 2022, less than two years after winning the national championship. Orgeron agreed to stay on as head coach the remainder of the season, but said after Saturday’s game he’d fulfilled his obligation.
The 60-year-old Orgeron finishes his LSU career with a record of 51-20, a .718 winning percentage. But since going 15-0 and winning the national title in 2019, the Tigers are just 11-11.
On Saturday, LSU jumped out to a 17-7 halftime lead before Texas A&M (8-4, 4-4 SEC) rallied to take a 24-20 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Tigers drove for the winning touchdown, Max Johnson’s 28-yard pass to Jaray Jenkins with 20 seconds remaining.
LSU will learn its bowl destination on Dec. 5, the day after the conference championship games.
