27-year-old man killed in Fairfield shooting; woman detained for questioning

A shooting Saturday night in Fairfield left one man dead, and a woman detained for questioning.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just before 7:30 p.m. to the 600 block of 55th Place in Fairfield on a report of a person shot.

When they arrived on the scene, they found a 27-year-old male suffering from a single gunshot wound, said Sgt. Joni Money. The man was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A woman believed to be responsible for the shooting remained on the scene and is being questioned by detectives, along with other witnesses.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting will be determined as the investigation develops, Money said.

She said there is no further threat to the general public.

The homicide is the 182nd in all of Jefferson County so far this year. Countywide, there were 183 homicides in all of 2020.
