PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J. -We all have bad days where something is just a little off.
For the Devils, they weren't themselves on Friday night in Nashville. A 4-2 loss to the Predators is one thing, but the effort given in that losing effort was not up to the standards the club is setting for themselves this season. As the team turns the page to their game tonight against the Flyers, it's important to take the lessons from that loss but still get read of the bad and move on.
"Obviously wasn't good enough," said Devils defenseman Ryan Graves. "I think there's a few areas of the game where we need a little bit more effort and just to clean it up, whether it's just effort-wise or structurally. But I think we've addressed a few things that can bring a little better energy to our game and make things a little bit tougher on opposing teams that can help us kind of spring momentum in our favor a little bit more."
"When we play well, what do we do that makes us play as fast as we can, the number of shots we get, how we get on the transition?" said head coach Lindy Ruff. "So we had individual line meetings, we talked to the defense to just sort of reset and get ready for tonight."
NEEDING THE POWER ON THE POWER PLAY
The Devils power play is hurting right now, in terms of getting rewarded. It ranks 27th in the NHL at just 13.5% conversion.
"I think our power plays is starting to look like a power play that's going to be dangerous," said Ruff.
The Devils are 0-for-6 in the last two games on the power play and just two for their last 21. One thing Ruff thinks can help the man advantage is getting Ty Smith going.

SMITH IS BACK
Ty Smith is back in the lineup tonight having missed the team's last two games as a healthy scratch.
"'It's something that obviously sucks when you have to do it," Smith said of sitting. "But it's something you can learn from. I think watching from up top, you see things very differently. And I haven't had the chance to do that here yet. So being able to do that, watch from up top and learn some things and guys' tendencies, it's kind of a cool way to look at the game. So obviously, it's not something you ever want to do again, but something that I can use as a learning experience."
Smith had a brilliant rookie campaign but has had a rough start this season. The Devils gave him the two-game reset and hope he comes back against Philadelphia with new energy and new success.
"The puck decisions and the defending decisions have to be better," said Ruff. "He is going to be back in the lineup and we know when he's playing well that's a player that can help us win. I think watching for a couple of games, and realizing that in some of the defending situations that he's given up with a couple of his puck decisions, he understands that he needs to be better. He's not walking away from that part of it. And I'm pretty sure that he's going to be a lot better tonight."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (8-6-4) vs. FLYERS (8-7-4)
TV: 7 p.m. ET; Televised on MSG+
Head-to-Head:
The Devils host the Flyers for the first time this season after playing eight contests during the 2020-21 campaign. Both teams each won four games; however, Philadelphia won the last contest, 4-2, in New Jersey's season finale. Sunday's game is the first of three meetings between the metropolitan clubs. The other two contests are in Dec. 2021, the next at home on Dec. 8 and the series finale in Philadelphia on Dec. 14.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are still searching for consistency and looking to bounce back from a tough loss in Nashville on Friday. Over the last five games, the team has gone 1-2-2. New Jersey has multiple opportunities with games on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday to get back into the win column.
One area of focus has been special teams, particularly with the power play. New Jersey hasn't scored on a man-advantage opportunity since Nov. 14, despite having 11 power plays in that time frame.
Nathan Bastian played his first game back with the Devils, after New Jersey claimed him off waivers on Thursday. Devils head coach Lindy Ruff was impressed by the forward's play and the coaching staff is working on getting Bastian up to speed with the penalty kill - a big part of his role last season with New Jersey.
Jesper Bratt is the points leader for the team with 14, while Pavel Zacha remains the top scorer with eight goals. Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier are tied with 10 assists as the leader in that category.
Flyers Team Scope:
Philadelphia is on a five-game losing skid, most recently losing 6-3 to the Hurricanes on Friday. In addition to wanting to stop the skid, Philadelphia only has two games over the next week, which makes winning now even more important.
Flyers Captain Claude Giroux is a huge offensive threat that New Jersey will need to focus in on. Giroux leads his team in points (17) and assists (10). He is tied with Cam Atkinson for most goals with seven.
Goaltender Carter Hart has a 5-5-3 record with a 2.67 GAA and .920 save percentage. Hart also has one shutout this season.
By the Numbers:
Two Swedish players are riding multi-game points streaks. Andreas Johnsson and Jesper Bratt each have at least a point in their last three games played. If Johnsson gets a point against the Flyers, he will match his career high for points streaks. He's done this two other times in his career, 2018-19 and 2019-20 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
The Devils power play will have quite the test when they face the Flyers. Philadelphia's penalty kill is 12th in the league, keeping opponents from scoring 84 percent of the time. In the last five games, the Flyers have killed off 12 of their 14 penalties.
