The 2021 Ballon d’Or award is set to be awarded this Monday by France Football, and Thomas Muller is on board with having Bayern Munich teammate Robert Lewandowski claim the honor.

Lewandowski has been an all-around standout performer for both Bayern Munich and the Poland national team so far in 2021. From his decisive goals in Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League play to his key goals for Poland over the Euro 2020 tournament, he sure has delivered on the biggest stages in world football over the calendar year.

Lewandowski faces stout competition for the 2021 Ballon d’Or award, from Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi to Chelsea midfielder Jorginho. But as Muller noted to Sky Deutschland, there is one major reason as to why the veteran Polish striker is most deserving of claiming this year's Ballon d’Or for what would be the first such win of his career.

“Lewy has to win it,” Muller said. “He's absolutely deserved it. Lewy won everything with us, then the award was canceled, then he went on and broke the goal-scoring record in Germany this season.

“When you see what he's doing with the Polish national team — which is more difficult than in a real top team. I have to say there isn't one player who individually performed better. Lewy has to win the Ballon d'Or.”

A 2021 Ballon d'Or win surely would be a legacy booster to whoever goes on to claim it this upcoming Monday.
