Holy Cross wins first FCS playoff game with late touchdown against Sacred Heart
The Holy Cross Crusaders have earned their first Football Championship Subdivision playoff win with a come-from-behind first-round victory over Sacred Heart University on Saturday.Sophomore quarterback Matthew Sluka connected with sophomore wide receiver Jalen Coker for a 35-yard touchdown that gave Holy Cross its first lead of the game with just 14 seconds remaining.Senior defensive lineman Dan Kuznetsov sacked Sacred Heart quarterback Marquez McCray to seal the 13-10 win in front of the home crowd at Fitton Field.With a win over the Northeast Conference champion Pioneers (8-4), the Crusaders (10-2) advance to the second round of the FCS playoffs and will face No. 5 Villanova, the champions of the Colonial Athletic Association.Sluka completed 13 of 19 passes for 171 yards and the one touchdown to Coker, who caught five passes for 103 yards. Sluka also led Holy Cross with 90 rushing yards on 23 carries.Senior kicker Derek Ng connected on field goals of 23 and 38 yards for the Crusaders.Holy Cross junior linebacker Jacob Dobbs finished with a game-high 18 total tackles, including 1.5 sacks. Sacred Heart took the lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by Rob McCoy with 9:38 remaining in the first quarter and held a 7-3 lead at halftime.A field goal gave the Pioneers a 10-3 lead with 12:09 left in the fourth quarter, but Ng was able to make it 10-6 less than four minutes later with his 38-yarder.Holy Cross entered the playoffs having won their third Patriot League championship in a row.The Crusaders had previously made the FCS playoffs four times, including in 2019 and 2020, but came out on the losing end in each of their opening games.
