NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Brian Laundrie’s family discovered one of their guns was missing at the time they reported their son missing, but the info wasn’t made public, their lawyer said.
Attorney Steven Bertolino told CNN they discovered one handgun was no longer in its case when surrendering their guns to police in September.
Bertolino said law enforcement agreed that it was best for information about the missing gun to not be made public.
"Imagine, with the frenzied atmosphere at the time, if the public thought Brian had a gun," Bertolino told CNN. "I cannot speak to why (law enforcement) did not reveal the info but we spoke about it at the time and I believe they felt as I did.”
Laundrie went missing days after his fiancée Gabby Petito was reported missing. Her remains were found in a Wyoming park in September, and it was determined she was strangled to death.

Laundrie went missing Sept. 13, when the Laundrie family told authorities that he had gone for a hike and never returned. He was not formally reported missing until Sept. 17.
Laundrie’s remains were then found in a Florida reserve a month after Petito’s remains were discovered, on Oct. 20.
Officials described the remains as “skeletal” and used dental records to confirm the identity.
A coroner has since ruled he died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
It isn’t known whether the missing gun was found near Laundrie’s remains.
Laundrie’s death brought the nationwide search for the only person of interest the FBI had named in Petito’s disappearance and murder case to an end.
