The losses the Boston Celtics are suffering these days are making the Houdini question if this current group is even good enough to be one of the final eight teams standing in the Eastern Conference.

It’s one thing for Kevin Durant and James Harden to march onto your home floor and continue their thorough domination of the Cs that started during the 2021 postseason with a gentleman’s sweep in the east quarterfinals.

But for the San Antonio Spurs to come in and own leads of up to 24 points and ultimately defeat Boston as an underdog is alarming. And no, the fact that it’s the early portion of the season, when a team that has made every postseason since 2015 usually isn’t as worried, doesn’t work this year.

First-year head coach Ime Udoka doesn’t have that luxury being that this is his first foray into the NBA head coaching waters.

So what has to change? Well, that’s a question that has no definitive answer. But ask certain Celtics fans and they’ll tell you that the massive contract of Marcus Smart (and his current shooting habits) could be an obstacle to winning in this current setup.

Smart is a winning player. He’s proven that time and again as one of the key pieces on a perennial playoff team for more than half a decade.

But he may be best suited on a contender that is a few pieces away, as opposed to the current roster, which may need a complete facelift roster construction wise.
