Former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops brought a flamethrower to a discussion about the Sooners’ rivalry with Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State occupy the same region, so their rivalry is backed in.

The problem is it hasn’t exactly been competitive over the years. The Sooners’ rivalry with Texas has easily overshadowed Bedlam.

It’s not like both teams haven’t been competitive at the same time. In fact, nine of their last 11 meetings have seen both come in ranked.

Despite that, Oklahoma has had the lion’s share of the victories, whether you look at the past decade, the past 50 years or the full length of the rivalry.

That got FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff thinking: Is it even a rivalry? Bob Stoops weighed in.

Is it a rivalry if Oklahoma State has only beaten Oklahoma 18 times in 125 tries?

The former Oklahoma head coach didn’t exactly give much respect to the rival there. It can be kind of hard to do that when the Cowboys have just two wins since 2011 and four wins in total this century.

Oklahoma State did have a nice run from 1995-2002 when they won five of eight meetings. Since then it’s been all Sooners.

Oklahoma leads the all-time rivalry with a record of 90–18–7.

This year the Cowboys have a slight edge from the oddsmakers and pollsters. They are four-point favorites and outrank their rivals as the No. 7 team in the nation.

Whether or not it is a rivalry matters less than what the game means for both squads. Oklahoma State is already in the Big 12 title game. The Sooners must win to punch their ticket. If they lose, they’ll open the door for Baylor to fight for the conference title.
