One Killed in Crash on Route 4 in Northwood, NH

A man was killed in one of two separate crashes on Route 4 in Northwood Friday night

Although just over two inches of snow fell in Northwood after turning over from rain the road was only wet at the time of the crashes, Northwood Fire Chief Mark Tetreault told Seacoast Current. No snow or ice had accumulated on the road surfaces prior to either crash.

A crash in front of the Mobil station claimed the life of the driver who was entrapped in a badly damaged pickup truck, according to Tetreault. The trauma unit at Concord Hospital was on standby to receive the driver, an adult male, who died before the two sets of Jaws of Life could extricate him.

Tereault did not disclose the identity of the driver.

Power Knocked Out by Crash

An earlier crash heavily damaged a utility van after it hit a pole near Cooper Hill Pizza breaking it in numerous places, according to Tetreault. Power lines also came down causing a power outage and the road was closed. The driver was treated for minor injuries at the crash scene and refused to be taken to a hospital.

New Hampshire State Police and Northwood Police are conducting investigations into the causes of both crashes.

The National Weather Service reported 2.3 inches of snow fell in Northwood once the precipitation turned from rain. A trace was reported in Berwick and at the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease.
