‘Julie and the Phantoms’ Season 2: Everything We Know

Julie and the Phantoms Season 2

Updated December 21, 2021

Netflix’s hit musical comedy-drama, Julie and the Phantoms, has unfinished business. But will we get answers to the last season’s cliffhanger with a Julie and the Phantoms Season 2?

Sadly, we will not. It was announced on December 18, 2021, that Netflix has officially canceled the series. The news was shared by executive producer, Kenny Ortega, on Instagram. This update is coming over a year after the show released its 9-episode freshman run.

Let’s take a look at what could have happen with a second season.

Julie and the Phantoms Production

In April of 2019, executive producer Kenny Ortega signed a contract with Netflix committing him to multiple years of content creation with the streaming platform. The production of Julie and the Phantoms was a part of that deal.

As far as his involvement with kids television, Ortega is perhaps best known for directing High School Musical. In addition to High School Musical, he also directed Newsies. So he’s well versed in the musical television and film genre!

The Plot and First Season

Julie and the Phantoms is a series about how Julie’s passion for music. This passion causes her to accidentally summon the ghosts of the band Sunset Curve, which she joins as the lead singer. The show was created by Dan Cross and David Hoge and is based on a Brazilian show called Julie e os Fantasmas.

Principal photography for Season 1 started on September 17, 2019 and wrapped on December 14, 2019. The trailer was released in August of 2020, and the series premiered to great success on September 10, 2020.

Season 1 stars Madison Reyes as Julie Molina, Charlie Gillespie as Luke Patterson, Jeremy Shada as Reggie Peters, Owen Patrick Joyner as Alex Mercer, Jadah Marie as Flynn, and Sacha Carlson as Nick.

Julie and the Phantoms Season 2 Rumors

As of December 2021, it’s understandable why details on a possible Season 2 have been pretty much non-existent from Netflix. However, before the series was officially canceled by the streaming giant, the cast and crew have gave us multiple clues that there might be more to come.

When a fan asked executive producer Ortega on an Instagram post if there was to be a second season, he said “We are working hard with our Netflix partners to come back. Please continue to hang in there with us. We depend on your continued support!”

Julie and the Phantoms Season 2

The actor who plays Reggie, Jeremy Shada, was interviewed by Pop-Culturalist and said concerning the potential of another season, “I can’t say officially. I do not know. I have not been told.”

Shada continued, “But I’m hoping. We’re all ready to go back. We’re all waiting for the call. If they pick it up and greenlight it, we’re there.”

It sounds like the cast, crew, and fans were all ready for The Phantoms to make a comeback. Anyone else thinking a petition to Netflix might be in order?

Julie and the Phantoms Season 2 Cast

According to Shada, it sounded like the original cast was all game to come back. Without the core group, a Season 2 wouldn’t have be impossible.

Of course, you needed to have Julie Molina, and you needed to have the Phantoms. Otherwise, the title of the show wouldn’t have make much sense. So that would mean Reyes, Gillespie, Joyner, and Shada would have needed to return as Julie, Luke, Alex, and Reggie respectively.

And, we would have needed Caleb Covington to return in order to resolve the cliffhanger possession at the end of Season 1. For this to occur, we would have needed Cheyenne Jackson to sign on.

Perhaps, Netflix will consider a movie to wrap up the storyline?

Netflix Cancels Julie and the Phantoms Season 2

After the news on December 18th that Netflix had canceled Julie and the Phantoms Season 2, we now understand why fans had been waiting so long with no update from the series.

When considering their release schedule, Netflix doesn’t want competing content airing at the same time. If the content is too similar, it will split the audience, which decreases viewership. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for the cancellation.

The Baby-Sitters Club will likely be greenlit for Season 3, which would put production in the early stages of 2022. Netflix wouldn’t want to risk splitting viewership between these two TV shows.

We wish we had a more positive update for you – but know that we were just as excited about a Julie and the Phantoms Season 2 as you were!

Let us know your thoughts on the cancellation below. And let us know what you would have wanted to see in a second season!
