SYRACUSE, N.Y. (CitrusTV) – Five minutes of overtime could not break the ice in a low-scoring battle between Syracuse and Vermont.

The Orange (5-6-3, 4-2-0 College Hockey America) and the Catamounts (6-6-2, 4-3-1 Hockey East) played to a 1-1 tie Friday night. The teams had a combined 65 shots on goal in total. Syracuse and Vermont had 11 shots each at the end of the first period.

The game had remained scoreless until the third. UVM’s Sini Karjalainen gave her team the lead 3:36 into the final period. The senior defenseman scored her second goal of the season Friday — with assists credited to grad student Kristina Shanahan and senior Theresa Schafzahl.

The Orange had played from behind numerous times this season so far — something they again had to do on Friday. SU continued to pummel Catamount Goaltender Blanka Škodová. The Senior from the Czech Republic recorded 29 saves throughout the night.

Finally, it clicked for the Orange. Madison Primeau scored with 5:59 remaining in regulation. The Freshman found the back of the net for the second game in a row. Primeau has now scored three goals in her last four games — the only blip being last Friday’s game against Penn State, which resulted in a 1-0 overtime loss. Primeau also now has six goals on the season. Terryn Mozes and Sarah Thompson provided assists on the game-tying goal.

A noticeable aspect of Friday’s game was how contentious it was on offense, but simultaneously very clean. There were only two penalties — a minor penalty assessed to Vermont in the 2nd for delay of game, and a body checking call on Syracuse’s Sarah Marchand in the 3rd period.

Senior Goaltender Arielle DeSmet had a solid night between the pipes as well. The Vermont native had a homecoming Friday, making 34 saves. DeSmet is from Charlotte, V.T. — about 20 minutes from Burlington, where Friday’s matchup took place.

The Orange and the Catamounts will be back at it Saturday night. Game time is set for 7 PM from Burlington.
