MLB rumors: Yankees linked to All-Star outfielder suddenly on trade market

This will get the MLB Hot Stove sizzling.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports “Word has gotten out that the Orioles would listen on star CF Cedric Mullins, and teams are lining up to give it a shot knowing it’s a long shot. Asking price is understandably extremely high. All these teams (and more) could use a CF: Philly, Rangers, Astros, Giants, Mets, Yanks.”

(It’s worth noting that Heyman’s report on Mullins came out before the Mets signed Starling Marte to a four-year, $78 million contract.)

Mullins is an absolute stud for the Baltimore Orioles. The 27-year-old set career highs in 2021 with 30 home runs, 30 stolen bases and an .878 OPS. As a result, the first-time All-Star finished ninth in voting for the American League MVP Award and picked up a Silver Slugger Award in the process.

And here’s the best part: the lefty-hitting Mullins is under team control through 2025, according to Spotrac.

So why would the Orioles consider trading Mullins?

Baltimore lost an AL-worst 110 games this season and is light years away from contending. Trading Mullins now would give the Orioles more chips to use in the future when the club is ready to climb out of the cellar in the American League East.
