TOR@SJS: Tavares scores PPG in 2nd period

SAN JOSE --John Tavares and William Nylander each had a goal and an assist for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 4-1 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Friday.

Auston Matthews scored his ninth goal, and Joseph Woll made 34 saves for the Maple Leafs (15-6-1), who have won three straight and eight of nine.
"He had some incredible saves late in the game there," Tavares said. "Just staying calm and poised. ... He doesn't take things too seriously. ... It's great to see him really get this opportunity and take advantage of it."
Sharks coach Bob Boughner said, "I thought they were the better team. We didn't look as fresh as we have in the last couple of games. I didn't think we had that same pop, and you've got to be at your best to beat one of these teams."
Nick Bonino scored for the Sharks (10-9-1), who finished 2-2-0 on their homestand. James Reimer allowed four goals on 17 shots before getting pulled 10:44 into the second period. Adin Hill made 16 saves in relief.
"It was good for Hill to get in there," Boughner said. "I was trying to spark the team. Maybe have a little bit of a mental change there. I thought Hill played well while he was in there, so that was important to see. But for [Reimer], it was more of just a rest thing."
Nylander gave Toronto a 1-0 lead 32 seconds into the first period on a backhand for his first goal in eight games.
"It's tough when you fall down early to a team like that," San Jose forward Logan Couture said. "We worked hard. Just some breakdowns that cost us."

Bonino tied it 1-1 at 4:44 before Wayne Simmonds tipped in a shot by David Kampf to put the Maple Leafs ahead 2-1 at 5:16.
"[Nick Ritchie] made a great play to keep it in," Simmonds said. "Kampf came through, I kind of started heading to the net and Kampf threw a nice puck in there."
Matthews made it 3-1 at 4:57 of the second period. Reimer stopped Michael Bunting's backhand and Matthews scored on the rebound.
"We said going into tonight [that] we want to play our style, not theirs," Couture said. "Their style is feeding off transitions and turnovers. We fed into their style and recipe for a 4-1 loss."

Tavares made it 4-1 on a power play at 10:44.
"I think we're seeing what's giving us success and the type of team we have," Tavares said. "The way roles are developing and the way the chemistry is kind of building out. When [we're] having success and results and we're doing good things, we talk about having an extremely high standard and pushing that level. That's really what we want to be about."
NOTES: Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic became the 17th active player and third in Sharks history to play 1,100 NHL games behind Patrick Marleau (1,607) and Joe Thornton (1,104).
