The Mets have reportedly struck for their first notable move of the offseason.
The team was in agreement with free agent infielder Eduardo Escobar, according to multiple reports on Friday. The deal was said to be worth two years and $20 million.
The 32-year-old veteran was a first-time All-Star in 2021, clubbing 28 home runs with a .786 OPS while splitting the season with the Diamondbacks and Brewers.
The switch-hitting Escobar has seen time at both second and third base throughout his career, though he probably seems better suited for the hot corner at this point.
The Mets struggled to fill both positions at times last season, with JD Davis struggling with injury and ineffectiveness, Jeff McNeil slumping, and Robinson Cano suspended for the year.
The Mets' midseason acquisition of Javier Baez provided a glimpse of a potentially dynamic and productive double-play combo along with Francisco Lindor, but Baez now is a free agent.
Previous reports have indicated the Mets and Baez are mutually interested in a deal, and, according to Audacy Sports MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Escobar signing wouldn't preclude a more significant signing of a Baez type.
Escobar, then, appears to be something of a potential insurance signing in the case that the Mets are unable to lock up Baez. Escobar was ineligible for a qualifying offer from the Brewers, so his signing won't cost the Mets any draft picks.
