PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) Just minutes before puck drop on Long Island, Bryan Rust was scratched from the lineup for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

A full participant in the morning skate, it is currently unknown what pulled Rust from the lineup.

Rust left pregame warmups early.

Veteran forward Brian Boyle was moved into the lineup to fill the empty roster space.

Boyle was a healthy scratch in the previous five games.

While the reasoning behind the late scratch is unknown, Rust did suffer an injury early in the season that forced him to miss just under a month of the season.

It’s possible he is still suffering from lingering issues.

The Penguins are just breaking free from a small COVID outbreak within the team that took multiple players out of the lineup.

The reasoning for the scratch will probably go unanswered until after the game.
