The Los Angeles Angels have been in the rumor mill over the possibility of re-signing closer Raisel Iglesias, but they could face competition for him from the Philadelphia Phillies.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi recently touched on the possible free agent destinations for Iglesias, who is coming off of a potent campaign in his first season with the Angels where he notched 34 saves and a 2.57 ERA over 70.0 innings pitched.
Morosi speculated that the veteran closer may not be in line for a contract beyond four years and that both the Angels and Phillies are the two most likely destinations for him in the coming months.
More so, Morosi further added that finding a closer may be an urgent need for the Phillies front office, which comes after the team relied on the likes of Hector Neris (16 saves) and Ian Kennedy (10 saves) to finish off games last season.
Iglesias became a free agent after he opted to turn down the Angels' one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer. Thus, if he opts to sign with the Phillies or any other team in free agency, the Angels will then receive a compensation draft pick.
Angels general manager Perry Minasian has made note of his aspiration to keep Iglesias in Anaheim. Before Iglesias elected to decline the Angels' qualifying offer, Minasian said that the team would “love to keep him.” And even though the Angels came to terms with former New York Mets left-handed reliever Aaron Loup on a two-year, $17 million deal, Minasian mentioned that this move “does not preclude us from Raisel by any means.”
Iglesias may end up having a fair share of options on just where he will pitch in the 2022 season.
