Rainy conditions and icy roads resulted in a Berrien County crash that left one person dead Thursday, deputies said.
Two cars had collided on U.S. Interstate 94 near Maudlin Road in New Buffalo Township.
Deputies with the Berrien County Sheriff's Office were sent to the scene around 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
When investigators arrived, they found a woman lying in the road and unresponsive. A man had been pinned under a vehicle.
They determined that a Ford Escape with four people inside had been driving east near the truck weight station.
The vehicle lost control due to slick conditions, ran off the road, and hit a guardrail. It came to rest on the shoulder.
A passenger in the back seat got out to help the front seat passenger when a second vehicle, a Buick Lucerne, lost control in the same area.
The Buick spun into the Ford, hitting the passenger side while one of the passengers was standing next to it. The collision pinned the passenger between both vehicles.
