Spencer (2021)

Powered by Reelgood

Kristen Stewart recently claimed that she’s only made five really good movies, and we’re pretty certain that Spencer, the film in which she portrays Princess Diana, is one of them. You can judge for yourself (hey, maybe you think she’s not giving Snow White & The Huntsman enough credit!) now that Spencer is now available this week on VOD. This week also marks Tom Hardy’s return as Eddie Brock, a journalist whose human self coexists with an alien symbiote known as Venom in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. In the film, which is the sequel to 2018’s Venom, Woody Harrelson reprises his role as serial killer Cletus Kasady who now has a symbiote of his own named, you guessed it, Carnage.

And if you’re in the mood for a “How do you do, fellow kids?” moment, the movie adaptation of Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen is available for purchase on VOD. The beloved musical stars Ben Platt, who won a Tony Award for his portrayal of the teenager the show is named for, but who unfortunately no longer looks like a teenager. In it, Evan Hansen is an awkward kid who, it appears, is the subject of a classmate named Connor’s suicide note. It turns out the note was something Evan wrote himself, he wasn’t even friends with Connor, but he doesn’t come clean about that fact and it leads to a lot of anxiety – his and ours – as his lies about his friendship with Connor deepen.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Placed on death row for his crimes, Cletus Kasady (Harrelson) will only speak to one person before he’s scheduled to die: Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock, the investigative journalist who has previously profiled Kasasdy. During Brock and Kasady’s exchange, Kasady becomes agitated and bites Brock, ingesting some of the symbiote that lives in him, and creating a symbiote of his own, called Carnage. Carnage helps Kasady break out of prison and it’s up to Venom to stop Kasady from wreaking havoc and killing everything in its path.

Spencer

Just when you thought that Emma Corrin’s depiction of Princess Diana in The Crown was the definitive version of the People’s Princess, along comes Kristen Stewart to snatch, well, the crown. Spencer depicts the disintegrating relationship between Charles and Diana as they spend the 1991 Christmas holiday together with the royal family. It’s over the course of this weekend that she realizes she needs to escape her royal life and, though many similar themes are explored during this most recent season of The Crown, Stewart’s nuanced performance and the relationships the film explores with her children and staff create a fuller picture of a woman who is desperate to be defined outside the confines of her marriage.
