Salem's Market fed 1,000 people Thanksgiving Dinner in the Hill District

Salem's Market and Grill hosted a drive-through and walk-up Thanksgiving dinner giveaway on Thursday.Families in Pittsburgh's Hill District received their meals at the former Shop 'n Save parking lot. Several local partners pitched in thousands of food items to help the volunteers serve around 1,000 meals.“I’m blessed that I have family, I have friends, I have this food that I have received. I’m thankful for God giving me another breath and another day of waking up in the morning,” Sandra Barbour said.Barbour drove through the line to pick up food for her family. All meals were packaged up to go, but Abdullah Salem hopes to host a Thanksgiving giveaway buffet style next year.“Unfortunately, because of safety concerns, we want everyone to practice safety and eat at home. God willing, next year the store will be up, and everyone will be here eating with us, and will have a Thanksgiving dinner here, and we will all break bread together,” Salem said.Salem hopes to open a new Salem's Market location in the former Shop 'n Save space by June 2022.Pittsburgh Mayor-elect Ed Gainey stopped by to show his support for Salem's Market and its new role in the Hill District."I think it's a great opportunity. It's about bringing the community together, and I think this is a great way to do it," Gainey said.Gainey joined the group of volunteers in serving meals to people in the Hill District and said he’s proud that this market will be filling this space.“In honor of just recognizing the Hill District selecting us, we are so honored to have been selected by the families, the businesses, and all the members of the whole district. We wanted to give back to the community, first and foremost, with this Thanksgiving meal by way of introduction of ourselves to the community and reaching out to everybody in need during this family time,” Salem said.Retired Pittsburgh police officers Brenda Tate and Tonya Ford, who own their own security company, volunteered to provide security for the giveaway and direct traffic. Both were born and raised in the Hill District and have a passion for service to others.“We grew up in this community, so we know the people, we know the passion of Salem, and we’re just willing to do what we can to make sure people have a blessed holiday,” Tate said.
