Orval M. Smith, 90 of rural Cherokee, died Friday, November 19, 2021 at Labette Health in Parsons. Born June 30, 1931, in Cherokee County, Orval was the son of Alva F. and Addie Jane (Brenner) Smith.

Orval and Betty Lou Yagher were united in marriage January 21, 1955 at the Columbus Methodist Church. She survives him at the home.

Orval farmed his entire life in Cherokee County until failing health compelled him to retire. He was a graduate of West Mineral High school with the class of 1949 and was a longtime member of the West Mineral Methodist Church.

Orval is survived by his sons Al Dean Smith (wife Karen) and Phil M. Smith (wife Kelley); two sisters: Lela Grant (husband Jack) and Alice Mussa; three grandchildren: Nick Smith (wife Emily), Sarah Fast (husband Chad) and Jason Smith (wife Ashley). Six great-grandchildren: Collin, Alexandria, Hayden, Lincoln, Alexa and Blake; along with a brother-in-law Charles Yagher (wife Susan) and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Orval was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson Alex, and brother-in-law Joe Mussa.

Private graveside services were held Wednesday, November 24, at the Park Cemetery in Columbus. Pastor Ronald Johnson officiated.
