'Battlefield 2042' Head Of Design Is Leaving DICE

Yikes

DICE's head of design Fawzi Mesmar has left the company following the release of Battlefield 2042.

While Mesmar has yet to publicly announce his departure, VGC obtained an email sent to staff that reveals he had long planned to move on after the launch of the team's latest shooter. Mesmar had been head of design at DICE since 2019, and oversaw work on Battlefield V, Star Wars Battlefront II, and Battlefield 2042.

Take a look at Battlefield 2042 in action below!

“It was an absolute pleasure to serve on the best design teams in the galaxy,” his email to the staff reads. “The incredible design work that you do continues to inspire me every day. Thank you for putting some faith in me, I hope I didn’t disappoint. I have been made an offer I couldn’t refuse at another company that has been kind enough to wait for me until we have shipped. It was super important to me to be here with the team as we achieve this historical milestone.

“While Oskar [Gabrielson, studio GM] and myself have been discussing my succession plans for some time – and it will be announced in due course – we opted to delay this communication till after launch to keep the focus – rightfully so – on the game we’ve been putting a monumental amount of effort on.”

It remains unclear where exactly Mesmar is off to next, but VGC notes that the email confirms the role will be in Sweden.

EA has since confirmed the news. “Fawzi Mesmar is leaving DICE at the end of the week," a representative for the publisher told VGC. "We wish him the best in his future endeavours.”

Unfortunately, Mesmar won't be leaving DICE and Battlefield 2042 in the best of circumstances. The game has had a pretty rocky launch so far, and has received overwhelmingly negative feedback from players. While DICE has already released a major update and outlined more to come, the last week or so probably hasn't been the victory lap Mesmar might have been hoping for.
