Boys bowling: Ewing looking to return to its winning ways despite roster turnover

The reigning Trenton Times Boys Bowler of the Year, Kyle Delutis will look to lead the way for Ewing once again in 2021-22.

Heading into last year, things were looking bright for Ewing, which was fortunate enough to return each of its top five bowlers from the previous season.

Unfortunately for the team, two of its top three bowlers from last season are lost to graduation following the departure of Aiden Reid and Michael Franks.

The Blue Devils will turn to their three returning bowlers from a season ago as well as a couple of new additions as they look to continue the program’s winning ways. Seniors Kyle Delutis and Nick Canavera are each four-year starters and figure to lead the way for the team in 2021-22.

Delutis led the team in scoring last season, averaging a 189 per-game score that was also the top average in the area. Last year’s Trenton Times Boys Bowler of the Year, Delutis figures to play a vital role in the team’s success once again and will be a major factor in determining the team’s success level this season.

Canavera’s average of 180.5 was also one of the best in the area last season, helping propel Ewing to a 6-1 record last season in the abbreviated campaign. He was comparatively consistent, only dropping below 500 on two occasions while managing to put up some eye-opening scores, including a 587 against Burlington Township and a 598 against Northern Burlington.

Junior Kenny Romero performed well throughout last season but may have taken a leap in the second half, finishing with four straight sets of 535 or better to cap off his sophomore year.

Morris Glover saw limited action last season and will likely step into a more featured role this time around, while newcomer Jacob Delutis will look to replicate the success of his older brother in his first year on the roster.

It has been a successful decade for Ewing, which has only had one year in which it lost more than one regular-season match since 2016-17 and has had a winning percentage of .687 or better every year throughout the previous 10 years.

Even though a pair of its top bowlers from a season ago are gone, if the team’s recent history is a reliable indicator, the Blue Devils will likely elevate their crop of young bowlers and build another successful season in 2021-22.
