Finally, after nearly two years of lockdowns and Zoom drinks, safely attending a party is now a reality. This Christmas gives us reason to glam up like never before – think sequins, feathers, metallics and platforms. Leave subtlety at the door and really celebrate in earnest whether with friends, family or colleagues.

If you are planning to invest in something new this party season, or just aren't sure which festive favourites to pull out of your wardrobe for those Christmas events, we are here to help.

We called on some of our favourite designers, all of whom have a strong sartorial party game, to decode the trends and looks that will define your wardrobe during the most wonderful time of the year - and that you'll continue to love for party seasons to come.

David Koma: bodycon

"Women are excited to dress up again, express themselves through fashion and accentuate their bodies. It is the exact opposite silhouette to the leisurewear that due to the global events dominated our wardrobes last year," says David Koma.

"My aim is to make women feel strong and confident in the clothing I create. It is not about the garment, as much as it is about how it makes a woman feel. Our bodycon dresses are executed in sculpting materials – like stretch sequin or cady. They offer support and comfort, making the wearer feel more confident.

"I am a strong believer that everyone should try the bodycon silhouette. It is all about the balance and if you're not ready for a full bodycon look, you can opt for a figure-hugging skirt with an oversized top. I like a relaxed sweatshirt, for example, or you could counterbalance your bodycon dress with oversized outerwear – like a boyfriend-style tailored blazer or an oversized shearling jacket."

Halpern: sequins

"Going into this holiday season, I think expression through glamour is now more important than ever," explains Michael Halpern. "After quite some time of celebrating being on the back burner, being able to come together in such a glittering manner is going to be incredibly important and cathartic for all. Having a collective release while wearing a sparkly frock is going to be a great moment for us all to celebrate the brightness of the future."

"When wearing sequins, a way to look at them with a fresh eye is by pairing them with really bright colours. Sequins can be so easy to style with black or a more neutral tone, but adding an embroidered piece to an already gorgeously bright combination feels really exciting for the time."

Harmur: the party top

"A party top is one of the most versatile partywear pieces as you can wear it with so many items," says Harmur founder and managing director Constance Murphy. "This season I’ll be wearing one of our new cocktail tops in silk velvet with our matching wide-leg silk palazzo pants for more dressy events. For drinks and casual dinners I’ll go for one of our signature classic sand washed silk tops or one of our sequin classics with a great pair of jeans, amazing heels and an oversized blazer or dinner jacket and statement earrings."

Taller Marmo: feathers

"We love feathers because they reflect the cyclical spirit of fashion," says Taller Marmo co-founder and designer Riccardo Audisio. "Feathers are being used in the same way as a century ago in the Twenties, when a new world was awakening – just like today. A feathered piece can be styled in an over-the-top way, making it flamboyant and fun, but you can make it glamorous and decadent in a more low-key way if styled with minimal jewellery."

Missoma: the 'neckmess'

"Party jewellery is about getting creative and indulging your playful side. There are three tips we swear by, and that’s starting with a base chain, adding length and then throwing a textured or statement piece in to draw the eye. There really are no rules when it comes to mixing and mismatching your jewellery – the ‘neckmess’ look is something I'm embracing right now," says Missoma founder Marisa Hordern.

“No other layering style so encapsulates what people are looking for at this moment in time: maximalism, self-expression, fluidity and joy. Layering has become a simple art we can use each day to show the world who we are, and this is only increased now that we have a party season upon us. Our customers are reaching for bigger and bolder jewellery than ever before. Glamour was also one of our inspiration words for our recent collaboration with Harris Reed, pictured here with our ornate locket necklace."

Kitri: party trousers

"Party trousers feel cool and effortless and give you a great opportunity to style and layer with your other favourite pieces in your wardrobe that you may have purchased during lockdown," explains Kitri founder and creative director Haeni Kim.

"I love versatility and longevity in trousers, too – it’s something you can wear all year around and give a different look and feel each time with the styling. With the PJ trousers, our retro star-print Apollo trousers for example, I would go either all out with the coordinating top in the same print and pair with a vertiginous platform heel for maximum impact, or dress it down with patent Mary Jane flats from Manolo Blahnik or sumptuous velvet slippers and a cosy cashmere knit in a neutral colour with great pair of earrings."

Lado Bokuchava: Cut-out details

“Everyone is valuable," says Lado Bokuchava, the buzzy Tbilisi-based designer stocked at Cult Mia. "We need to embrace self-love and accept all body shapes, and cut-out styles accentuate curves beautifully. The post-Covid era has created a shift towards statement-making items and the idea of building a vibrant, yet glamorous wardrobe. Cut-out pieces can be worn in so many different ways - cut-out blazers are great styled with mini skirts for a playful look; match cut-out skirts with turtlenecks for a balanced outfit; and cut-out tops teamed with maxi skirts can be paired with high heels for nights out or with low heels for casual ensembles.”

Loeffler Randall: Platform heels

"After the year everyone has had, getting dressed up for a party is extra special right now," says Loeffler Randall designer Jessie Randall. "I've spent a year in slippers and slides, so can’t wait to wear our platform green Natalia heels or our rust velvet Fae heels. Both of these options are great because with the platforms their pitches are quite low, which allows you to look fabulous without sacrificing comfort."
