When learning of Carlos Correa’s comments regarding his Gold Glove awards, Derek Jeter believed they didn’t even warrant a response.
New Angels pitcher and ex-Met Noah Syndergaard, on the other hand, has one in mind.
Correa, who is one of the top free-agent shortstops on the market right now, recently stated that Jeter did not deserve any of the five Gold Glove awards he won throughout his career. Correa, 27, recently won the first Gold Glove and Platinum Glove (given to the best defensive player in each league regardless of position) of his career.
When asked by MLB Network which player he’d most like to strike out with his new team, Syndergaard pointed to Correa.
“Not just for the obvious reason,” Syndergaard said, “but just what he said about Derek Jeter not deserving his Gold Gloves. I think that was a little ridiculous to say.”
By the “obvious reason,” Syndergaard is likely referring to Correa’s involvement in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal during their 2017 World Series championship run. The Astros eliminated the Yankees in the ALCS that year.
Jeter, who is now a part-owner of the Marlins, took the high road in regards to his ability in the middle of the infield.
“I didn’t think much about it,” Jeter told reporters recently at a Marlins team event. “I don’t know how my name came up. My Spanish is not that good. I still haven’t seen it. I don’t know how my name was brought up, but it doesn’t even warrant a response. I could go in a lot of different directions, but I won’t.”
Syndergaard recently signed with the Angels on a one-year $21 million deal rather than accept the $18.4 million qualifying offer from the Mets. He is joined by another ex-Met, Aaron Loup, who signed with the Halos on a two-year contract worth $17 million.
Correa could emerge as an option for the shortstop-needy Yankees, and GM Brian Cashman said recently that Correa’s cheating past would not prohibit the Bombers from signing him. He now has another strike against him in The Bronx, however, with his critiques of The Captain.
