We are a little over a month into the regular season, and there is still no telling what will happen with Ben Simmons. The former number one pick has cited he is not mentally ready to take the floor, and a return date has not come close to being discussed.
Despite the endless behind-the-scenes drama, the Philadelphia 76ers have done a great job not letting it distract them. Not only that, but they started the regular season on a high note. Before their roster was hit hard by health and safety protocols, the Sixers were atop the Eastern Conference and had the NBA's top offensive rating. Not bad for a team missing one of its franchise cornerstones.
No team ever wants to find itself without the services of an All-Star player, but some good has come from the situation. Not only are more players empowered now, but some have taken a huge step forward in their development. Most notably, Tyrese Maxey, who has shined as the team's new full-time point guard.
In just his second season, Maxey has provided a glimpse of his limitless potential. So far this season, the 21-year-old is averaging close to 19 points and five assists per game and connecting on almost 40 percent of his three-point attempts. He has shattered all expectations set for him heading into the year. So much in fact that the front office might change their view on a Simmons trade.
As we know, Daryl Morey has patiently waited for a high-caliber player to become available via trade. The long-time executive only intends to move the disgruntled Simmons in a deal that increases the Sixers' chances of competing for a title.
Throughout the summer, most reports had the team linked to lead ball-handling guards. Some examples are Portland Trail Blazers' CJ McCollum and Sacramento Kings' De'Aaron Fox. But after seeing how Maxey has flourished this season, Morey might be convinced the Sixers have their point guard of the future.
Tyrese Maxey has shown he can be a starting point guard in the league. With him playing at a near All-Star level, it could be tough to send him back to the bench if Simmons is traded for a lead guard. Putting him back in a limited role could hinder the rapid development the former first-round pick has shown thus far.
If anything, Maxey's emergence gives Morey more freedom in his trade efforts. Now, he can also target star wing players like Boston Celtics' Jaylen Brown.
Obviously, Morey should continue to pursue every possible avenue in a potential Simmons trade. That being said, Maxey's long-term role is a factor he needs to keep in mind.
It's clear the Sixers have a star in the making with Maxey. If Morey can end the Simmons saga in a scenario that allows Tyrese Maxey to keep his current position, the Sixers might open their window of contention even more.
