A Boston Bruins star who was less than 24 hours removed from taking a nasty hit during Wednesday night's hockey game spent Thanksgiving Day donating and delivering hundreds of pies to Massachusetts organizations.Charlie McAvoy carried on a Bruins annual tradition dating back to the late 2000s. "Giving back to the community in Boston, it gives you some perspective," McAvoy said. "On a day like today, it makes you even more thankful for what you have." According to the team, the 23-year-old defenseman purchased and donated more than 300 winter hats to be distributed among the shelters, which included the New England Center and Home for Veterans, St. Francis House, Pine Street Inn, Haley’s House and The Home For Little Wanderers. McAvoy also took part in a holiday turkey carving at Pine Street Inn with newly-elected Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. "We have so many amazing people. Amazing volunteers, people with gigantic hearts. Overall, it was a great day today and I was really happy to be a part of it," McAvoy said. Table Talk Pies and Hockey Cares Inc. provided the pies for this year’s delivery, while McAvoy partnered with Operation Hat Trick and ’47 for his winter hat donation to the local shelters. According to the Bruins, this year marks the 13th consecutive season that a Bruins player has donated and delivered pies on Thanksgiving. The tradition initially started with Aaron Ward donating turkeys in 2008 and has since been carried on by former Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, Matt Beleskey, Gregory Campbell, and Dennis Wideman.
