The FDNY said the fire erupted at 78 Post Avenue, near East 204th Street and Post Avenue, at 9:15 p.m. Thursday and stretched into the top floor of the six-story building.

"[The fire] got into the space between the ceiling and the roof, we call that the cockloft," Chief of Department Thomas Richardson said Wednesday night. "It quickly spread throughout the cockloft and it escalated to five alarms."

Richardson said 198 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and no injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

Richardson noted part of the building was under renovation after "a previous multiple alarm fire" there in January.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The FDNY said The Department of Buildings is on scene to investigate the building's stability.
