Ralf Rangnick has agreed to become Manchester United's interim manager, according to David Ornstein and Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.

The German is expected to fill the vacancy - created by the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - when an agreement is reached to vacate his role as head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Rangnick will join the Red Devils on a six-month contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until the end of May. He's expected to remain at Manchester United for a further two years to work as a consultant, Ornstein and Whitwell add.

The 63-year-old isn't expected to take charge of United's next Premier League game against Chelsea on Sunday, as he's yet to obtain a work permit to coach in England.

Michael Carrick will likely resume his duties a the club's caretaker manager at Stamford Bridge.

Former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde was linked with the vacancy earlier this week before Rangnick emerged as the top candidate.

Rangnick is widely regarded as the architect behind the modern coaching methods used in Germany and for influencing managers such as Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, among others.

A majority of his coaching experience comes from working in Germany with clubs such as Hannover 96, Schalke 04, 1899 Hoffenheim, and - most recently - RB Leipzig. He enjoyed most of his success while acting as the director of football at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig during the better part of the last decade.

News of Rangnick's impending arrival comes less than a week after United relieved Solskjaer of his duties as manager. The Norwegian was in charge from December 2018 until last weekend after the club lost its fourth Premier League match in five games.

Manchester United are expected to resume their search for a permanent manager following the season. Mauricio Pochettino of Paris Saint-Germain, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers, and Ajax's Erik ten Hag have been linked with the position.

United sit eighth in the Premier League with 17 points from 12 games.
