PCSO: All 11 people transported to hospitals following Thursday crash on Hwy. 10

The Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office says 11 people were transported to area hospitals for treatment following a single-vehicle rollover on Hwy. 10 Thursday.

Lt. Steve Brown of the PCSO said the large group of people was traveling in a 15-passenger van Nov. 25 on Hwy. 10 near County Hwy. G at 8:48 a.m. when the hit an icy patch of roadway on a bridge.

“It was just pure ice, the road was very slick,” Brown said.

Along with responding deputies, emergency crews from SPFD and Rudolph responded to the scene, where the vehicle was found in the median. One person was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and another was partially trapped, requiring extraction, Brown said.

Paramedics at the scene requested a Box Alarm for additional resources.

Ambulances were requested from Stevens Point, Plover, Amherst, Wisconsin Rapids, Grant, Iola, and Mosinee. The Amherst mass casualty unit and Plover traffic incident management team were also called to the scene.

The Portage Co. Highway Department was also called to the scene, as rescuers reported “extremely slippery” conditions on Hwy. 10.

Two medical helicopters were summoned to the scene but both had to cancel their flights due to inclement weather, but both offered ground transportation if needed.

Brown said the extent of the injuries was not immediately known, as victims were taken to several different hospitals in Stevens Point, Marshfield, and Wausau, but wounds ranged from minor to severe. Nine of the victims were under the age of 18, he added.

The family was not local, Brown said. The incident is still under investigation.
