Italian born, London based singer/songwriter Alessandra Boldrini recently released her latest single, “Never Going Back.” Taking inspiration from the lies of Dua Lipa, Mabel and Clean Bandit, the infectious pop single speaks about seeing someone’s true colours after being blinded by their facade. With relatable lyrics and a fast-paced, dance-worthy beat, the track is the perfect song to get you up on your feet. Her determined, strong vocals are reminiscent of Jess Glynne, as she sings “I’m better off without you, now that you’re getting the truth, I’m never going back to you.”
Boldrini is the definition of a strong, independent woman, as she demands respect and walks away from the negativity in her life. The musician shares: “I realised that this person was nice and helpful just to get something back in return, which I definitely wasn’t going to give! Surround yourself with people who make you a better person!” PopWrapped caught up with her to find out more about her new single, her upbringing in Italy and future release plans.
Your new dance-pop song “Never Going Back” narrates breaking trust with someone – did this come from a personal experience and if so, do you feel like song-writing is a form of emotional release to help you get over hurdles in your life?
“Never Going Back” does come from a personal experience, as all of my other songs! I had a really complicated situation a couple of years ago with someone I considered really important to me and, once I got over everything, I wrote ‘Never Going Back’ as a reminder of how I shouldn’t let people treat me. I did learn my lessons, and I’m glad I got out from my chest everything I’ve written in the song! Song-writing is a very powerful tool, and it really did help me to become more aware of my feelings and emotions. I think it’s like a form of therapy and it’s beneficial to face, read and better understand what we have inside.
Despite its negative theme, “Never Going Back” is the ultimate feel-good, dance-worthy anthem, delivering an empowering message. Are there any other messages that you like to include within your music to help others?
I always hope to help others with my music, focusing on positive and empowering messages. When song-writing, I try to put my heart and mind on the same page, usually after going through some bad situation or feeling certain emotions… I think that sharing my experiences and feelings can help other people who feel the same way know that they are not alone? I think it can be very reassuring to know someone else is in the same headspace.
I imagine preparing to share each new release can be a nerve-wracking experience. How do you feel now that this song is out in the world?
It can get really stressful sometimes before a release; the thought of people knowing what goes through my head it’s always a bit frightening! At the same time, it’s exciting as it’s a new piece of me that I get to share with the people who support me, so I’m really happy that my song is finally out!
You’re originally from a small village in Italy called Fabriano. Do you think growing up there has influenced your style or sound at all, and how important was it for you to take the leap to move to London?
Growing up in Fabriano with my family definitely shaped me and helped me become the person I am today. However, living in a small town can be hard sometimes as people tend to be very judgmental, so I’ve never felt entirely able to be myself. Sometimes I’m still very insecure about myself, and I think growing up there has influenced this a lot. This is one of the reasons why I decided to move to London as soon as I graduated from high school; I thought I’d have never been able to pursue my dreams there. It was the hardest decision of my life, but… since living in London, I’ve learned so much and become a completely different, maybe better, version of myself. I do miss my family, friends, and Fabriano a lot, but I know they are always in my heart and always supporting me.
Your music is inspired by the likes of Dua Lipa. If there was one song of hers that you could’ve written, which one would it be and why?
Indeed! I love Dua and her last album inspired me and my music in so many ways! I wish I’d written the whole Future Nostalgia album, but if I have to choose only one song, I’d say “Don’t Start Now”. It’s such a powerful, expressive and relatable song. I love how bold it is and its message. We all have those people who aren’t good for us, and it’s important to know when to call it quits and move on!
What advice would you give to other artists wanting to pursue a career in music?
I’m still learning and getting to know how this industry works but I’d definitely say, “don’t miss out on opportunities and work harder than the person next to you, always”.
With venues starting to reopen, are there any live shows coming up in the not-too-distant future?
I would love to perform anywhere; however, I do not have a band at the moment and I’m working on putting one together. I love performing and, once the time comes, you can definitely expect lots of energy and dancing!
Finally then, what’s next for you? What’s your next dream or ambition you want to fulfil?
I’ve been thinking about an EP and surely I’ll be telling more in the upcoming months. For now, a new release is coming in February 2022 and there are a couple of cool projects starting up behind the scenes…stay tuned to know more!!
