The Theater im Delphi in Berlin has announced the upcoming world premiere of Frank Witzel’s opera “R.U.R” based on the famed playwright “Rossums Universal Robots” by Karel Čapek.

Čapek’s play is considered a blueprint for quite a bit of 20th century science fiction and still reflects current themes such as economic and ecological catastrophes as well as human hubris.

The opera will star soprano Gina May Walter and counter-tenor Georg A. Bochow alongside the RIAS Kammerchor and conductor Ralf Sochaczewsky. Scene and light design is by Marion Wörle and Maciej Śledziecki. “R.U.R.” is supported by Hauptstadt Kulturfonds, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Lord Mayor of the City of Köln/Cultural Office.

The performances at the Theater im Delphi will take place between January 20 – 22, 2021. The opera will then move to Comedia Köln for presentations on Feb. 5 & 6, 2022.
