Box-Office Hit Clifford the Big Red Dog To Get Sequel
Paramount Pictures and eOne Films‘s surprise box-office success Clifford the Big Red Dog is slated to get a sequel in the not-too-distant future.
When Clifford the Big Red Dog opened earlier this month, it made a big splash on both Paramount Plus and at movie theaters earning a decent amount of money on its opening weekend–it ultimately topped $20 million in its first five days of release at the box-office. It is also expected to play well into the holiday season given its tremendous family appeal. It earned a solid “A” CinemaScore grade in addition proving that audiences just loved it. Now, a sequel is said to be in development at Paramount.
Norman Bridwell is the author of the acclaimed Scholastic book series which had inspired the very popular new film and there are plenty of stories left to tell featuring the large red dog Clifford. Paramount has confirmed that there will, indeed, be a sequel to the recent movie despite the mixed reviews it received it from movie critics.
Jack Whitehall played the lead adult character in the just released film and starred opposite the legendary John Cleese who, admittedly, had a minor role in the picture. That could change in the sequel and Cleese’s character could get more screen time than he had in the original. Rising young actress Darby Camp will most likely reprise her role as Emily, Clifford’s owner.
The appeal of a big red dog in New York City was largely underestimated and even Paramount itself moved the film from its original release date trying to find the perfect timing to release it and it was eventually “unleashed” at the right time winning over fans both through streaming and also playing on the big screen.
Not much is known about the sequel project as of yet but there are tremendous possibilities of what can await audiences in the forthcoming follow up film. This move to make a sequel could hint that this could be the start of a largely profitable franchise.
Younger viewers, in particular, are going to be quite excited at the prospect of seeing their favorite little girl, Emily, and her oversize pet dog back on screen again. The appeal of these movies may simply rest in the premise itself rather than the actual quality of the first film although there certainly was nothing wrong with the original other than that it felt a bit conventional. Nevertheless, we’ll be sure to announce more news as it develops regarding the upcoming Clifford the Big Red Dog sequel.
