An investigation is underway and vaccine administration has been halted at two pharmacies in the Northern Panhandle after the pharmacies administered overly diluted doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, state officials said.
COVID-19 vaccine administration has been put on hold at Davis Brothers Pharmacy at both locations in New Cumberland and Chester in Hancock County, according to a news release from the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
The news release said the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy will direct Davis Brothers Pharmacy, a family-owned pharmacy, to properly contact patients who received the lower dose vaccines and for the pharmacy to follow up with those patients in the coming weeks to ensure all who were affected were notified.
Overly diluted doses were given by the two pharmacies to individuals 12 and over between April and November, the news release said.
State officials said other COVID-19 vaccines, pediatric Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson’s Janseen COVID-19 vaccines were not affected by the dosing error.
The West Virginia Board of Pharmacy issued a cease and desist order to both pharmacies while the investigation is underway.
State officials said over-dilution results in a person receiving a lower-than-authorized dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The news release said officials are recommending that patients of Davis Brothers Pharmacy be revaccinated with a full dose for every over-diluted dose they received.
