If recent rumors are to be believed, it appears Ben Simmons is feeling the financial consequences of his standoff with the Philadelphia 76ers.
According to Howard Eskin of 94WIP during his Tuesday evening radio show, his sources have claimed that the want-away Sixers star is “cash flow broke.” Aside from the fines he has been slapped with for his current issue with Philly, his luxurious and expensive lifestyle has allegedly made things difficult for him—at least financially.
“I was told by somebody very reliable he may be tapped out, broke,” Eskin said, per 95.7 The Game. “Cash flow broke. Because he's losing so much money, but he spent so much money. 17.5 million dollar home, remember he has to pay taxes too. 17.5 million dollar home. He's got two homes in the Philadelphia area, probably worth eight or nine million. He buys a new car every month, four or five hundred thousand. He just spends money like it's nothing because he thinks it never ends. And the person that told me, it's very reliable that he has got serious cash flow issues.”
It's difficult to verify the credibility of the claim, especially since it's hard to imagine a player like Ben Simmons—who has already made over $50 million in his NBA career up until the 2020-21 season—will have financial problems. Not to mention that he's being handled by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports. They would have advised him better if it will have major financial repercussions in his life, right?
However, it won't be surprising if the rumor is true. After all, the Aussie has already lost millions of dollars in fines and withholding of pay for refusing to join the Sixers since their 2021 NBA Playoffs exit.
Up until now, Simmons is still not suiting up for the Sixers. He has returned to the team and joined practices, but he reportedly said he's not yet mentally ready to play.
It is unknown if he still has any plans to wear the Sixers uniform ever again, but given the amount of trade rumors recently, Daryl Morey and Co. seem to be actively looking for a deal for the 25-year-old—though their asking price remains high.
Simmons and his agent have yet to address these talks about his financial issues. If it proves to be a big problem as the rumors claim, the camp of the three-time All-Star might be forced to do something soon.
