Winter Park, Fla.—The Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team is once again on the road this weekend, this time taking on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Florida) Friday and Rollins College Saturday at the Rollins Classic.
The Matchups
Mercyhurst and Embry-Riddle have never crossed paths.
The Lakers competed in the 2012 Rollins Classic, taking on the hosts in game one and ultimately falling 65-55. They played an overtime thriller the next night against Cedarville (Ohio) but came up two points short.
Coming Together
The Lakers have played a tough preseason schedule to prepare themselves for the PSAC season, which kicks off Dec. 3 at Shippensburg. Despite four losses to start the season, the team is meshing. Case in point: the Lakers are averaging 9.3 assists per game and averaging two more assists than their opponents.
Leading the Way
The Lakers have two players averaging in the double-digits in Julia Buchman (12.3 ppg) and Grace Centrulla (12.0 ppg). Jayde Boyd is nearing a double-digit rebound average with 9.0 per game currently, and also has six steals on the season.
Scouting the Eagles
After splitting a pair of exhibitions to begin their season, Embry-Riddle won both of their games at the Bahama House Classic. They suffered their first non-exhibition loss at Flagler on Saturday. Senior Sydney Jones leads the Eagles, averaging 13.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. She is followed by Macee Sugrue (11.7 ppg) and Nikki Tucker (9.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg). The Eagles begin their conference season against Rollins on Dec. 1.
Scouting the Tars
Rollins has played an even season thus far, splitting their two games at the Bahama House Classic and splitting their next two games after that. They most recently dropped their first conference game of the season, 65-55 against Palm Beach Atlantic. They will take on Grand Valley State Friday before playing the Lakers Saturday. The Tars have four players averaging nine or more points, led by Niya Pluviose (10.5 ppg). Maria Atanassov-Tomas has 9 rpg in two games played.
