Thanksgiving weekend is projected to be one of the highest grossing weekends for movie theaters in a long, long time. Movies like Disney’s Encanto, House of Gucci, and Dune are all projected to make significant gains. Dune, in particular, is expected to finally cross the $100 million dollar mark over the weekend. However, the movie is not entirely disappearing from theaters anytime soon. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Dune will make its glorious return to IMAX theaters on December 3 for a limited period of time.
Director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is one of the most visually spectacular films to be released this year. Sadly though, many viewers chose to experience it at home on HBO Max. However, because the movie garnered praise in early reviews for its visuals, many viewers instead chose to see it in a large-format IMAX theater. In fact, 20% of the total box office for Dune in the United States came from IMAX theaters, nearly $50 million.
Having Dune return to IMAX theaters in December is likely to help make the movie a few extra million before leaving theaters entirely. This is especially likely since Dune has officially left HBO Max, making theaters currently the only place for viewers to see it.
Dune is based on a novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. It tells the story of Paul Atreides, a clever and gifted young man who has an important destiny in relation to the most dangerous planet in the universe, Arrakis. The movie stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Issac, Jason Momoa, and Stellan Skarsgard. It was written by John Spaihts, Denis Villeneuve, and Eric Roth, and directed by Denis Villeneuve.
