BOSTON — The former accountant of a Wareham asphalt company has been charged with hiding the firm’s taxable sales by falsifying financial records.

Christopher Polito, 37, of Dedham was arraigned Monday in Suffolk Superior Court for allegedly submitting false sales records to the state's Department of Revenue, Attorney General Maura Healey announced today.

Polito worked as an accountant for Rochester Bituminous Products Inc., a Wareham-based company.

A company spokesperson was not available for comment before the Thanksgiving holiday.

An investigation by the A.G.'s office on a referral from the department found he allegedly submitted false documents to the revenue department in 2015.

Specifically, the office alleges, Polito altered documents to make it seem as if sales were made to tax-exempt entities in order to avoid the state's 6.25% sales tax.

The A.G.'s office alleges that in reality, the sales detailed in the falsified documents were made to non-exempt firms.

According to the office, the investigation is ongoing.

Polito is charged with obstructing the department of revenue, making a false statement, and two counts of conspiracy.

He is due in court on Dec. 15 for a pretrial conference.
