Lord Of The Rings Studio Making New Game Based On "Major Worldwide IP"

Lord Of The Rings Studio Making New Game Based On "Major Worldwide IP"

The majority of its games are developed for augmented reality consoles.

Weta Workshop, the special effects and prop company that worked on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, has revealed that it is beavering away on a new game inspired by a "major worldwide IP."

This was uncovered in a job opportunity for a producer at the company’s interactive division, and added that it’s something that is “very close to our hearts.” That covers Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as these are the ones that the studio has consistently contributed to. However, that doesn’t necessarily rule out a new property that the team hasn’t worked on in the past.

It’s on its way to PC at the moment though there might be room for the release to come to other platforms. Among its previous projects, the team has worked with Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, Android, iOS, Magic Leap, Oculus, HTC Vive and with web browsers to develop games. And Weta Workshop added that the project is using an “incredibly rich and inspiring license that will fill fans and players around the world with delight.”

Those are a lot of big words there and I imagine that we won't see the game for some time. Its previous titles include Grordbattle, Dr. Grordbort’s Boosters, Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders and Combonauts. Of these, the majority were developed for Magic Leap, which is an augmented reality platform. If it continues with this tack, then it’s possible that the player will be immersed in the world. All in all, it’s worth keeping an eye on to see if we can ascertain anything specific from further announcements at the studio.
