Daniel Cormier was a dominant wrestler during his high school years at Northside High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. He was a three-time Louisiana state champion and has an overall high school record of 101-9.

Aside from that, he was also an all-state football player as a linebacker during high school and he was offered a football scholarship by LSU, but he declined as he wanted to pursue wrestling.

In 1995, he won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman Wrestling Cadet World Championships.

A few weeks after the fight, it was revealed that Jon Jones has been flagged for a doping violation. Jones was then placed on provisional suspension and his win was changed to no-contest and the title was returned to Cormier.

Cormier then moved up to the heavyweight division to challenge Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight championship at UFC 226. He won the fight via knockout in the first round making him the second fighter to hold two titles at the same time in the UFC.

He then defended the UFC heavyweight championship against Derrick Lewis at UFC 230. Cormier got the win via a rear-naked choke submission victory making him the first fighter in UFC history to successfully defend both the light heavyweight and heavyweight belts.

Stipe Miocic went for a rematch against Cormier at UFC 241 where he defeated Cormier via TKO in the fourth round. They faced each other again at UFC 252 to end the trilogy, but Cormier lost via unanimous decision and announced his retirement from the UFC.
