James Corden apologizes to BTS fans for jokes that resulted in 'extreme' backlash

Call it a good week for BTS. Tuesday the South Korean record-breaking boy band snagged their second Grammy nomination and got an apology from "Late Late Show" host James Corden. 

The "Butter" artists joined Corden in-studio for the late-night appearance, reuniting the talk show host and the band for the first time in two years. While exchanging pleasantries, RM (real name Kim Nam-joon) brought up the blow-back Corden has received from the bands devoted fans.  

"You've been in some hot water with (the) ARMY," RM said. "Are you all right?"

The question caused Corden to fall over in embarrassment. "We did two jokes, which I didn't think were in any way offensive to anybody, where we said that we thought it was unusual that you were kicking off the UN Summit with a performance," the host began, catching viewers up about material from a September show. "We said – and this was where I think it was wrong – we said that your fans were 15-year-old girls, which, of course, isn't true, because I'm 43-years-old, and I consider myself to be one of the biggest BTS fans on planet Earth."

On Sept. 20, Corden cracked to viewers the band's UN appearance marked "the first time 15-year-old girls everywhere found themselves wishing that they were (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres." 

Following the remark, "Late Late Show" bandleader Reggie Watts was the first to alert Corden to the uproar. The talk show host recalled Tuesday telling Watts someone had wished him dead.

"I was like, 'Well, someone's just told me that they hope I die today,' which did feel extreme," said Corden. "It did feel extreme in response to what I thought were two quite harmless jokes, which we never wanted to be at anyone's expense. Because – I hope you know this – we absolutely love you, and we love the entire ARMY. We do!"

He added: "The prospect of doing anything that may have upset them – I didn't enjoy that feeling, and I hope they know that we would never do anything that would upset (them)."

RM was quick to forgive. "James, it's all right," he said, extending his hand. "We appreciate your apology. We just wanted to clear the air."
