'The Matrix Resurrections' Isn't A Sequel Confirms Writer, Will "Subvert The Rules"

As if the Matrix films and all their lore wasn’t confusing enough already, apparently The Matrix Resurrections isn’t a true sequel. A new interview with the film’s co-writer says that although yes, the film is connected to the original trilogy, the way they are interwoven is a little different from what you might expect going in. 

As reported by To Vima (via CBR), it seems that the storyline is only going to get more complex with the release of the fourth film. We’ve already seen a hint of what the story holds - Neo seems to be back in the clutches of the Matrix and there is an entirely different version of Morpheus on the team. So why not also make it so that this movie isn’t a traditional sequel?

In an interview with To Vima, Resurrections co-writer David Mitchell says: “I saw the film in Berlin in September. It's really good. I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It's certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It's a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieves a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters.”

Interesting, very interesting indeed. I have no idea what that means for the film or what it means for the characters but I’m sure I’ll have something to scratch my head about when The Matrix Resurrections releases on December 22, 2021.
