Thanksgiving weather: Getting to grandmother’s house should be smooth, but Sunday trip home?

The getting there, weather-wise, looks good for Nov. 24-25, 2021.

Weather for highway travel over the next 36 hours in the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey looks good with a sunny Wednesday and a partly cloudy and warmish Thanksgiving, forecasts say.

There is the possibility of rain arriving overnight Thursday into Friday, but it’s not supposed to be a lot.

However, while the trip to grandmother’s house -- at least weather-wise -- should be smooth, if you’re making a long weekend out of it in the region, pay attention as Sunday’s forecast develops.

A clipper system could deliver 1 to 3 inches of snow Sunday into Monday, EPAWA Weather Consulting meteorologist Bobby Martrich said in his morning forecast video.

With it being so far out, there is no certainty, but the European and GFS models in recent hours show the possibility for winter weather near the weekend’s end south of Interstate 80, Martrich said.

The National Weather Service isn’t terribly excited at the moment, showing a sunny Sunday with a high of 43 and then a cloudy Sunday night with a overnight low of 26.

But, in the Mount Holly, New Jersey, office’s forecast discussion, there’s this in that time window:

“We will mention a low or slight chance of rain and snow for the time being, since the system is not expected to have much moisture associated with it. However, we will continue to keep an eye on the model trends over the coming days.”

While Martrich said there could be a quick inch or 2 of snow, “maybe even 3″, he was cautious as well since it’s still several days away.

“Is it going to be there” by the time Sunday arrives? he asked. “We don’t know yet.”
