Motown magic brightens the holiday weekend when the Four Tops and the Temptations play Soaring Eagle Casino 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27.
The history of The Temptations is a slice of contemporary American pop culture. The quintet was fostered in the cradle of Berry Gordy Jr.’s Hitsville U.S.A. studio in Detroit in the early 1960s. Fellow Motown artist Smokey Robinson wrote and produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” which made them stars.
The Temps’ hits include “My Girl,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Cloud Nine” and “I Wish It Would Rain.”
The Four Tops, formed as the Four Aims, performed together without a change in personnel from 1953-1997. They recorded their first single for Chess records in 1956, but didn’t hit it big until after Gordy signed the group in 1963.
Anchored by baritone Levi Stubbs as lead singer, they recorded one smash after another in partnership with the writing-producing trio Holland-Dozier-Holland, starting with “Baby I Need Your Loving,” and followed by “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” “It’s The Same Old Song,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” and “Bernadette.”
The latest Four Tops lineup still features originating member Abdul “Duke” Fakir, a first tenor, with Ronnie McNeir, Alexander Morris and Lawrence “Roquel” Payton Jr., the son of original member Lawrence Payton.
