A woman is recovering after being shot in the stomach while driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
State police said it was an act of road rage.
Morgan King spoke to Pittsburgh's Action News 4 from her hospital bed Tuesday night, after visiting friends in Pittsburgh over the weekend. Her parrot, Liberty was along for the ride.
“I was driving down 76, heading home. I went to merge into the left lane to pass somebody. I was in the middle lane,” King said.
She said another driver was in her blind spot, but she spotted the car just in time to avoid swerving into the other lane.
“I didn’t think he was mad. He didn’t even honk at me,” King said.
As his car became parallel to hers, she said she looked over at the driver and began to mouth the words “I’m sorry.” That’s when she saw a gun pointed at her.
“I don’t remember hearing it come through the door, but I felt it go through my stomach,” King said. “The bullet entered the right side of my abdomen and came out the left side.”
Despite the shock, King managed to pull off the road safely and call for help.
“I don’t understand how that could lead to you wanting to grab a gun and shoot someone. It was just absolutely shocking. To have that happen is terrifying,” King said.
King had to have surgery to repair her small intestine. Now the recovery starts.
Andrew Skinner is accused of firing that shot. Police tracked him down about 40 miles away from where King was shot. He’s being held on a $250,000 bond.
He is facing several charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and propelling missile into occupied vehicle.
“The anger that I am expecting at some point just hasn’t really hit yet. I’m very grateful that they caught up, so that no one else to be hurt, and so that I don’t have to feel afraid,” King said.
King’s roller derby team, Brandywine Roller Derby has started a GoFundMe for King, to help cover the medical costs.
