16-year-old Antonino Gianny Garcia was sentenced to five years to life in prison for killing 65-year-old Satnam Singh — a convenience store owner beloved by his community in Ogden.
Garcia will remain in juvenile detention and be transferred to adult prison when he turns 21.
In the Ogden community where people are still mourning the loss of Singh, who was shot and killed inside his own store, people said they feel the sentence is just.
“You do the crime, you do the time,” said Lasi Terkelson, who has lived in Ogden for 30 years.
Terkelson said she had many conversations with Singh at his store over the years. She saw for herself how time and time again, he would help people who’d fallen on hard times.
She said Singh had a list of people whom he’d help with groceries. People who needed food but hadn’t received their food stamps could buy groceries and pay later.
“I get teary-eyed just talking about him because he was amazing," she said. "He would help anybody. Anybody."
Terkelson is one of thousands of people who signed a petition to memorialize Singh by giving the street 675 North the honorary name of Satnam Singh Drive.
Ogden Resident Jesse Redden, who shopped at Singh’s store since he was a kid, is spearheading the effort for the honorary street name.
The Ogden City Council will discuss the proposal on Dec. 7 during their work session and then consult with the matter with the diversity commission.
Glenn Symes, deputy director for the Ogden City Council, said after they research the proposal, the council will schedule the matter for a public hearing during a regular council meeting.
Redden said he benefited from Singh’s generosity from the time he was a kid.
“Back in those days, I wasn’t as well off," he said. "He never judged me, he was always cool — he’d give me credit. I could get an item from the store and pay back on payday."
Redden said he hopes members of the Ogden Community who support the honorary street name will email the city council.
He said during times of political upheaval and negativity, remembering Singh is important and having his name displayed on a street sign is a good way to do it.
“He helped a lot of people find their way and maybe he can help people find their way in death as well,” he said.
