Dr. Jennifer Murray selected as new Superintendent of Reading School District

Dr. Jennifer Murray has been selected as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Reading School District. The Reading School District Board of Directors made the appointment official at the board meeting on Tuesday, November 23, 2021.

“We are pleased to announce Dr. Jennifer Murray as the new Superintendent of Schools. Since October, Dr. Murray has met with great success as the Interim Superintendent. She is a dedicated leader, having served more than 20 years in the Reading School District” said Mrs. Robin Costenbader-Jacobson, President of the Reading School District Board of Directors.

“Dr. Murray has demonstrated her commitment to the students, staff, and community of Reading, and we are confident her proven leadership and experience within the district will ensure a successful transition forward.”

Dr. Murray has been serving as the Interim Superintendent for the Reading School District since October of this year. Previously, she served as Assistant Superintendent for the Reading School District from August 2016 through October 2021. Dr. Murray’s career at Reading School District began in 1998 as a classroom teacher.

In 2003, she became a reading coach before moving into administrative roles as an Instructional Supervisor at Northwest Area Elementary from 2003 to 2006, Principal for the Gateway School for the Performing Arts from June 2006 to January 2011, Director of Literacy from January 2011 to July 2012, and Principal at Millmont Elementary from July 2012 to August 2016.

Dr. Murray looks forward to serving the students, staff, and community as a meaningful, visionary, action-oriented, and growth-minded Superintendent of Schools, advancing the mission and vision of the Reading School District.

Dr. Jennifer Murray grew up in Bucks County and has been married for 25 years with 3 children. Murray has a Bachelor’s Degree from West Chester University, Master’s Degree, Gwynedd Mercy College, and Doctorate, Immaculata University.

When asked about a Teacher who inspired her, Murray responded: “Ms Garafolo, who used humor in her classes and built relationships that went beyond the classroom. She was one of those teachers you always went back to see years later.”

The Reading School District has 19 schools, including 13 elementary schools, five middle schools, and one senior high school. With more than 17,800 students and approximately 2,000 staff members, Reading School District is the fourth largest school district in Pennsylvania and the sixth largest employer in Berks County.
