Doctor Who's New Year's Day special has announced a number of impressive names joining Jodie Whittaker's adventures.

The episode will be the first of three specials leading up to the star's departure as the Thirteenth Doctor, the final of which will see her regenerate into the Fourteenth (though we still don't know who is going to be playing the Doctor's next incarnation)

The BBC has now confirmed the January 1 episode will include This Way Up's Aisling Bea, Enterprice's Adjani Salmon and Father Ted's Pauline McLynn.

The synopsis reveals that Bea will play Sarah, who owns and runs ELF storage, while Salmon portrays Nick, a customer who visits his unit every year on New Year's Eve. However, their night turns out to be a little different this year.

The news comes after Doctor Who recently teased that Whittaker's final episode of the show is due to air in autumn 2022.

"Having been in charge of the TARDIS since filming began in 2017, showrunner Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker are set to leave the most famous police box on Earth – and the Universe," the show's official Twitter account confirmed last week.

"Having faced many perilous journeys battling some of the most feared monsters throughout space and time, it's the final instalment for the Thirteenth Doctor."

The feature-length episode, which has been described as an "epic blockbuster", will see the Doctor "fight evil across the galaxy one last time, but just who will she come up against in her final battle before the Doctor regenerates once more?"

Doctor Who: Flux (aka series 13) airs weekly every Sunday night on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
