Jack Payne struck in stoppage time to seal Swindon's win at home to Hartlepool as the Robins moved into the automatic promotion places.

Wales international Jonny Williams and Tyreece Simpson were also on target for the hosts at the County Ground.

Confusion broke out in the 28th minute as Hartlepool striker Mark Cullen seemed to have fired the visitors in front only for the assistant referee to put his flag up for offside after a lengthy wait.

Williams' bullet header rounded off a fast-flowing Swindon attack to instead give his side the lead seven minutes into the second half.

But their joy was short-lived as Matty Daly equalised for the away side with a powerful strike just nine minutes later.

Simpson put the hosts back in front after outmuscling opposition defenders before scoring with a well-placed effort into the bottom corner in the 68th minute.

Payne fired home from outside the box in stoppage time to wrap up all three points.

    A very much needed home win for the Town. Maybe we can go on a run of two home wins now against Harrogate on Saturday !!
    Not the best flowing performance from Swindon last night but it was a thoroughly good game to watch. Hartlepool we’re excellent and played really well in an open game. COYMRs

    I thought Hartlepool played excellent football last night and are in a false league position. It was a very clean match too, a very good advert for L2. Swindon didn't play that well but we do have some excellent players and in the end that made the difference. Well done to the Pool fans that made the trip, true fans.

    Swindon are obviously a very decent outfit but a month ago Pools were capable of securing at least a point from this fixture. Time to stop procrastinating and secure an experienced L2 manager before the rot sets in Chairman Raj. The fanbase deserves much better than this.
